ACADEMIC COUNCIL

MEETING MINUTES

January 21, 1999

Announcements:

Dean Keedy said that the search committee for Dan Snodgrass's replacement should include a representative from the Committee on Education Technology. The CET and the Academic Council were concerned that there be a search committee with faculty representation. Dean Jones suggested that the position be closely examined and perhaps reorganized.

Dean Keedy announced that Janis Lochner and select student representatives will make a presentation to the Board of Trustees in February on behalf of the Science Foundation. Posters depicting student accomplishments will be on display as well. Dean Keedy also said that he is currently setting up a Keck Foundation proposal writing committee.

Dean Atkinson brought the council up to date on the admissions outlook. One goal for this year is to send financial aid packages with letters of acceptance. Some possible strategies for improved admissions over the long-term are:

  • market the image of the type of student who attends Lewis & Clark - this would be effective for younger high school students who are making college choices much earlier than in the past
  • greater push for academic programs - retain the focus on international programs, but bring other academic programs into higher relief
  • segment the market - for example, by sending targeted literature to specific interests to individuals expressing different areas of interest
  • provide thematic admissions visit days (e.g. science day, music day…)

Agenda Items:

  1. GENERAL EDUCATION STAFFING: Dean Savage shared with the group his division's staffing list for next year. Dean Atkinson asked if the department chairs and all effected faculty had been notified; the response was a definite YES. Dean Johnson said that the semester scheduling form would be a good place for department chairs to write the names of Inventing America instructors; the forms would then be returned for approval after the Registrar reviews them.
  2. PRIORITY OF ROOM ASSIGNMENTS FOR INVENTING AMERICA: Dean Johnson is concerned that some of the classrooms being used are unsuitable and can ruin the class for students. He encourages the Registrar's office to use as much leeway as possible in placing Inventing America in desirable rooms. Dean Jones will meet with Dell Smith on this issue, adding that there are five classrooms designated for remodeling this summer.
