Academic Council
Meeting Notes
January 15, 2001
Present: Curtis Johnson,
Dean of the College; Dinah Dodds; Dean of Arts and
Humanities; Gary Reiness, Dean of Mathematical and Natural
Sciences; Harold Schleef, Dean of Social Sciences; Terri
Banasek, Administrative Assistant and recorder; and Rosie
Felton, Administrative Assistant for Budgets and
Contracts.
Announcements
- Rosie Felton distributed Capital Equipment Request
Forms for equipment over $5,000.
Agenda Items
- Parental Leave Policy: June Jones raised three
issues concerning the proposed policy: 1) The policy is
written in such a way that a brand-new person who is here
for the first time and is on a term contract could
qualify for a course off in the second semester. Ms.
Jones suggests a one-year waiting period. She also
recommends that the Council limit the frequency to one
course off every two years. 2) A person would qualify
for the CAS policy only if they do not qualify for other
leaves. 3) There are too many conditions that apply.
She suggests the list be trimmed. The Council agreed to
include only parental leave; pregnancy leave; and serious
illness of parents, spouse, children, or same-sex
domestic partners. Dean Johnson will discuss the changes
with Ms. Jones.
The policy will state that use of paid leave or course
load reduction must be completed within 12 months of the
birth or placement of the child. Regarding holiday pay,
Greg Walters stated that faculty must be in paid status
in order to qualify for holiday pay. Dean Johnson will
speak with Mr. Walters about waiving this requirement for
faculty.
- Indirect Costs in Grants: When there is a grant
requiring matching funds, the deans need to have those
matching funds available. If indirect costs are split
75/25 between the divisional deans and the dean of the
College, the dean of the College will not be able to
provide matching funds. At the same time, Dean Johnson
wants to reassure faculty that indirect costs related to
their grants are accessible to them. Dean Johnson will
speak with Mervyn Brockett to determine whether a 50/50
ratio might be more appropriate. Ms. Felton will
determine how much the indirect costs are bringing
in.
- Status of searches:
Arts and Humanities:
East Asian Art History: The search committee is
interviewing the fourth candidate, Karil Kucera, and they
hope to fill the position within the next two weeks.
Islamic Studies: Both candidates interviewed by
the committee are still interviewing elsewhere. Paul
Powers would like a tenure-track position.
Foreign Languages: Nicole Aas-Rouxparis, Jose
Villalobos, and Dean Dodds interviewed candidates at the
MLA conference. They are bringing candidates in French,
Spanish, and Chinese to campus in January. The Japanese
search committee is getting good responses.
Philosophy and Theatre: Both committees are still
receiving applications.
Social Sciences:
Political Science: Three candidates were
interviewed, and Dean Schleef extended a tentative offer
to the top candidate, which was declined. The committee
now is looking at entry-level candidates.
Luce, Social Psychology, and Neuroscience
Psychology: All three committees have invited
candidates to campus during the next few weeks.
Social Psychology: The committee is in the
process of narrowing down the list of applicants.
Pamplin Chair in Economics: The second candidate
will be on campus next week and will interview with
President Mooney on Jan. 31. The committee hopes to
complete their search by the end of January.
Mathematical and Natural Sciences
Computer Science: Committee is beginning the
process.
Invertebrate Biology: Three candidates will be on
campus over the next two weeks.
Developmental Biology: Two candidates were
invited for interviews; one withdrew his name from
consideration. The committee is returning the applicant
pool to determine whether to interview other
candidates.
Next meeting: Monday, January 22, 2001
