Academic Council
Meeting Notes
January 4, 2000
Announcements:
The position description for Japanese
Literature has been posted on the Associate of Asian Studies
website. No applications as yet. A committee is still being
formed.
Dean Johnson said that two candidates,
Leslie Goldstein and Lawrence Baum, will interview on-campus
in January for the Dubach Chair in Political
Science.
Dean Johnson said that the search in
Psychology (Perception) failed in December, due to a small
and sub-standard applicant pool.
Agenda Items:
Dean Atkinson discussed the recent RFP
from the Luce Foundation for Asian Studies. The Luce
initiative is a $12 million project designed to strengthen
the study of Asia at the undergraduate level, by creating 35
permanent new junior faculty positions over the next four
years through annual competitions. Deans Dodds and Johnson
and Trinh Tran will meet with the East Asian studies faculty
this week to discuss possible proposals.
Dean Keedy reported that the search
committee for the Earth Science position met prior to the
winter break, reviewed 70 applications for the tenure-line
position and reduced the pool to 6. He also reported that
selection of a home department for the candidates may not
necessarily be obvious. The top candidates are trained as
geologists, a department found in many liberal arts schools
but not LC. The Council agreed that a major in geology may
help increase enrollments in the other sciences. The comment
was made that Oregon is a natural environment for the study
of geology.
Dean Jones asked where the new
geologist will be housed. Dean Keedy said that they are
still undecided on the office space. There are funds in the
Mellon grant to equip the earth-science teaching laboratory,
but not for office remodels. It is thought that the old
Physics morgue will work well for the teaching
lab. In addition there is a need to do a remodel of Olin to
make laboratory spaces more functional, but the two projects
are separablea sequence of steps could be taken. Dean
Keedy will speak to Michael Sestric regarding the
planning.
There was a discussion of the
description for the BA/MAT 4+1 program, being formalized in
the 2001-02 catalog. Dean Dodds will speak to Teacher Ed to
clarify who will process the admission to the program. More
thought will be given to where the text should appear in
the CAS catalog.
