2. Think about how your culture (not necessarily you personally) feels about the right to die/assisted suicide. Be ready to write about it in class. If you don't know the situation in your country exactly, you can look on the internet. Search for "euthanasia" and the name of your country.

Plan for Wednesday's debate

Homework:

  • Read Case Study #3 (Annie) and Case Study #4 (Nana) (packet pages 25-27)
    Bring both of them to class. Be ready to explain why Annie's husband can be charged with MURDER and how his lawyer can argue that he is INNOCENT. For "Nana," be ready to explain to your classmates what happened in WASHINGTON and what could have happened in OREGON.
  • Start thinking about a position paper. As medical technology has advanced, the lines between life and death have become blurred. What should be the role of the medical professionals, the patient, and the patient's family in controlling the time of death. Explain your opinion, using examples from the different cases we have discussed or will discuss. In your paper, you should not confuse euthanasia with assisted suicide, and you should not confuse active euthanasia with passive euthanasia. DUE NOV. 10.

Be prepared to teach the class about your topic. If you read the article and can't understand it, come to my office and talk to me about it before you present.
  5. Another country assignment: Present Wed. Nov. 23. Investigate the status of fertility practices in another country (not your country). Find some news about what kind of research they are doing or what ethical issues they are dealing with. Be prepared to share one news story. In about 1/2 hour, using Google, I found these websites. You can use one of these, or you can find your own.
