Ron CraigRon Craig

Ron Craig is the Executive Producer of Filmworks Northwest, based in Portland, Oregon. He is currently creating a documentary entitled Who is York? A New Look at the Lewis and Clark Expedition to educate people of all ages about York, the only African American member of he Corps of Discovery. Ron enlisted James DePreist, the Oregon Symphony music director with a rich, distinctive voice, to narrate the film. He asked actor Danny Glover to lend his voice as the character of York.

Scholars including James Holmberg, who edited "Dear Brother: Letters of William Clark to Jonathan Clark" (Yale University Press), and James Ronda, author of two Lewis and Clark books and a professor of Western American history at the University of Tulsa, will fill in the blanks of York's story with on-camera interviews. They will be joined by Quintard Taylor Jr., a University of Washington history professor; Darrell Millner, professor of black studies at Portland State University; and Allen Pinkham Sr., tribal liaison for the Nez Perce tribe.

He also has co-authored a children's book of the same title that will be published by National Geographic during the Bicentennial years. He hopes to finish the U.S. piece next winter. Ron expects it will air next spring on public television.
