Real Life: Year Two
Throughout the 2004-05 school year, we joined these students as they experienced the ups and downs of life on Palatine Hill. Read their stories ... Rebecca Goldschmidt '08
"Hellooooo. I am Rebecca from the wonderful metropolis of Chicago. This is my first year here at Lewis & Clark, and I'm planning on majoring in Environmental Studies or Biology, with a focus in conservation biology. Yes, I am a science nerd, but when I'm not daydreaming about electron transport trains I like to make collages, collect useless things I find in trash cans, rip through racks at thrift stores, and juke to indie, classic rock, folk, and mainstream hip-hop (yes, it is physically possible.) Endlessly taking pictures is a also a wretched habit of mine, which may or may not be helpful in helping you, yes you, learn more about life here at L&C. Welcome to my world..." "There are two types of chocolate bunnies in this world. One type is hollow, the other is solid. Typically, the bigger the bunny, the greater the chance it has to be hollow. In this world some people apply that same assumption to individuals. I play football. I lift weights. I am of above average stature. That leads some individuals to see me as a hollow bunny, or more commonly known as a dumb jock. Well, I tell you that I am solid. I play football with valedictorians and I have on more than one occasion used my physics knowledge on the playing field. I too get homesick, miss the good old times, write poems to my girlfriend, and cry when my heart hurts. I’m planning on having one hell of a year. Keep up with my posts and you will learn many things. Hold on, I like bumpy roads." Real Life, by Ryan Chapman.
Craig Winston '06
"The name is Craig ... I came to Lewis & Clark via Berklee College of Music, Northeastern University, and New Mexico Highlands University…see a pattern here? I’m originally from New Mexico, a sleepy little city called Las Vegas ... it’s real ... look at a map! I’m some sort of Music and English major mutant hybrid with focuses on gonzo guitar performance and creative non-fictitious prose. I am always trying to move forward, further, advancing until one day, hopefully, my guitar, while in the throes of some irrational moment of sheer musical ingenuity, will spontaneously combust!" Abby Hazlett '05
"Hey there, I’m Abby. I’m a senior psychology major. It’s a little hard for me to believe this is my last year. I guess time flies when you’re having fun. I was born and raised in Chicago and Evanston, Illinois but the West Coast called to me for college. Lewis & Clark was one of the best choices I ever made. I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to get involved with student-faculty research at many other liberal arts colleges, especially not as a freshman. I am a huge psych nerd. I plan on getting my Ph.D. and doing research for the foreseeable future. During my three years so far at L&C I’ve done volunteer work, been a Resident Assistant, led campus tours, studied abroad in Australia, among other fabulous adventures and I’m trying to cram as much into this last year as I can!" Jordan Small '06
"I’m Jordan. I’m originally from Walla Walla, Washington – a town of about 30,000 people in the southeastern corner of Washington. No, it’s not close to Seattle; it’s in the opposite corner of the state. At my high school we have guns and sheep. Really. I’m a junior and an International Affairs major. This semester I am taking Perspectives in Biology, Principles of Economics, African Politics, and Conversational French. I feel very well-rounded. In our living room, we have a lawn chair, an American flag, a desk, Nemo from Christopher, and a rock named Flipper who is wrapped in the New York Times and duct tape. We also have a fruit bowl. ... Remember, the truth is out there." Real Life, by Jordan Small.
Jody Arthur '05
"I was born about 21 years ago in American Samoa. American Samoa is a tiny group of islands owned by the US and found smack in the middle of the Pacific. Three years ago I moved to the states for the first time to go to Lewis and Clark. I'm a senior now, and an English major (though sometimes I like to pretend I'm an art major). I’ve been alternately described as a very quiet person and as someone who has the attention span of a hyperactive ferret ... oooh, shiny! Gotta go!" Real Life, by Jody Arthur.
Brandon Berg '06
"I am a junior and political science major. I hail from Meridian, Idaho (just 6 miles west of Boise on I-84) where I lived my entire life until venturing to Palatine Hill (that’s the hill Lewis & Clark is on). I am a student and an assistant women's volleyball coach. I try not to think about all the hours that I spend in Pamplin Sports Center." Real Life, by Brandon Berg.
Melia Tichenor '07
"Yo yo yo... welcome to the awesome blog of yours truly... i.e. Melia Tichenor, sophomore, hypothetical French/Psychology double major, busy-bee extraordinaire! I’ve got a crazy hectic life that you’ll hopefully enjoy reading about... Originally hailing from Albany, California (next to Berkeley), I am currently enjoying an active sophomore year at Lewis & Clark, delving into the realm of Psychology, planning for the Gender Studies Symposium, and attempting to learn guitar. My other campus involvements include coordinating for Unisex (L&C’s queer and queer-ally student group), leading French discussion groups for beginning language students, and performing in the student-directed Dance Extravaganza. " Real Life, by Melia Tichenor.
