Real Life: Year One

Experience real life at Lewis & Clark College as it happens. Throughout the 2003-04 school year, we joined these students as they experienced the ups and downs of life on Palatine Hill.

Heather Hodges '07

"Howdy, I’m Heather. I was born in Hawaii (not Texas, as you might have surmised from my greeting), but spent a little over half my life in the land of tofu and sun, a.k.a. California. I can't stand tofu, by the way. I’m busy trying to find myself (funny, makes it sound as if I’m lost or stuck in a manhole!) All I know is that my life will always involve reading, writing poetry, sleeping too much, close-up photography, and pigging out on stuff that will end up clogging my arteries somewhere down the line. I’m a sophomore here at L&C, but surprisingly enough - not vegetarian! And although I do occasionally eat meat, I'm a nice person, I promise!" Real Life, by Heather Hodges.

Chris Leong '06

"My name is Chris Leong, and I am currently a sophomore here at L&C majoring in Foreign Languages - Japanese and Chinese to be exact. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i and graduated from a smallish private school called Iolani. I tend to write on and on... and many people have told me so... to my face. But if you're prepared to accept my copious amounts of writing, then welcome to my semester!" Real Life, by Chris Leong.

Sheila Taylor '04

"I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, and I am now an incredibly busy senior. For as long as I can remember, I have known that I want to be a veterinarian, so I knew right away that I should major in Biology. By my sophomore year, I had declared German Studies as my second major. During my junior year, I traveled to Munich, Germany with four L&C students and ten others. The Munich program was one of the most exciting and educational experiences of my life thus far. I am quite sure that I will make numerous references to things that I did while in Munich, so this is your forewarning!" Real Life, by Sheila Taylor.

Aaron Vandenberg '06

"It's the one, but not the only Aaron. I am originally from Southwest Colorado, from a tiny little town called Norwood. I am currently a sophomore here at L&C as an Environmental Studies major. My plan for time here brings me to integrate my admiration for food, photography, outdoor adventuring (mainly sea kayaking) and to combine them into an experience here at L&C that will serve me well into the future. I currently live in Odell this semester but I am off to East Africa next semester to go see what I can see (lions and hippos and termites, oh my!) I am involved in being a photographer, co-leader for a support group, volunteer and outdoor assistant here at school. It keeps me busy...I wouldn't have it any differently." Real Life, by Aaron Vandenberg.

Jaymie Cox '04

"Hi! My name is Jaymie and welcome to my little world inside Lewis & Clark. I'm originally from a little (emphasis on little) town outside Spokane, Washington called Medical Lake. I'm a senior this year (yea!!) and have been at L&C for all four years. I play softball for L&C and practice with the volleyball team. I'm a Communication major and will be doing a video for my thesis. I'm a peer advisor, co-coordinator for American Indian Heritage Week (yes, I'm part American Indian) and love country music. I grew up on a ranch with cattle and am a country girl through and through." Real Life, by Jaymie Cox.

Rob Hean '07

"Hey, I'm Rob Hean and I have lived in Westport, Connecticut since I was 2, although I was born in Calgary, Alberta. I'm a first-year and my major so far is Biology, but that'll change, I can just feel it. I live in the International Hall with my Japanese roommate, Taka (really cool dude, knows all types of martial arts.) My interests range from computers (games mostly), to historical fencing (poking people with pointy things, VERY safely, of course), to Yoga (contortionists unite!)." Real Life, by Rob Hean.

Dana Clark '05

"Hi, I'm Dana Clark, and I am a junior transfer student from Virginia, Minnesota. Since transferring from Texas Christian University, I have been busy establishing my niche here on campus as an English major and political activist. I sing with Vox Angelis (the all female choir) in my spare time, as well as hang with my floor mates on the Visual and Performing Arts theme hall. I also have a pet (shh! don't tell!) - it's a 10 foot tall palm tree, named Pervis. Pervis rocks!" Real Life, by Dana Clark.

Highlights...

casino nightBlackjack and flappers "So what do two hundred students dressed up, gambling, and practicing the Jitterbug dance to the tune of a trumpet ditty? Guess yet? It’s Casino Night, baby! Yeah…crazy night; where does one start? Aaron

Heather studyingCracking the books "In addition to my one midterm exam, I had two papers due and a chapter test in my language class (Russian). Needless to say, I’ve been working endlessly on midterm assignments, as well as trying to sneak in a life on the weekends. Also, I’m beginning to feel the pressure of the second half of the semester. It seems like all of the reading is finally catching up to me right now." Dana

sheila beachBeach Life "I went to the beach this weekend with my fellow Platt-Howard RA staff members for our spring retreat. We didn’t do a whole lot, just sat around and relaxed…no real structure like our last retreat, just some serious relaxation. We ventured out to the beach and climbed around on a bunch of cool rocks and saw a bunch of little barnacles, mussels, and sea anemones. The beach was awesome, and I took a bazillion pictures. Yeah, 72 counts as a bazillion." Sheila

Chris in IdahoCrossing the border "From there, we headed east (and, compressing 3 or 4 hours of driving into a single sentence), and headed straight for the Washington-Idaho border. After passing through Clarkston, Washington, we crossed the Snake River and crossed into Lewiston, Idaho. (Lewis and Clark, get it?)" Chris

L&C snowmanSnow Crazy "A bunch of Akin people got snow crazy this morning, there was a snowball fight right under my window. Snow must be scarce around here. I'm used to several feet of the stuff, so 1/2 inch is a light dusting to me." Rob

Jaymie's DogIt's a zoo "When I went to Spokane, I saw that my brother had gotten a little 8-week old Golden Retriever puppy plus we had the cat he gave his girlfriend for Christmas and our two other dogs and my cat that we’ve had for awhile. It was a regular zoo." Jaymie

say no to apathyThought-full break The best part of the break for me was watching the movie "Waking Life" for the fourth time. There has never been a movie that has made me think and question more than that one. I love that. Heather
