Center for Law and Public Policy on Sexual Violence

NCVLI's Center for Law and Public Policy on Sexual Violence (CLPPS) was established in 2003 as an outgrowth of the Violence Against Women Project. CLPPS's focus on sexual violence issues advances NCVLI’s goal of forging and strengthening the ties between organizations that serve all crime victims and those that serve survivors of sexual violence. CLPPS does not provide direct legal services to individuals. If you need direct legal assistance in your local area, please contact a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction.

ABOUT CLPPS

The CLPPS staff provides legal resources for lawyers, prosecutors, judges, law enforcement, legislators, policy analysts, advocates and researchers working to end sexual violence. CLPPS accomplishes this through:

Education
Providing information to the legal community about sexual assault laws and victims’ rights; giving law students educational opportunities through Lewis & Clark Law School’s Crime Victim Litigation Clinic.

Litigation
Filing amicus curiae briefs and supporting efforts to advance the law for sexual violence survivors; providing legal technical assistance to attorneys working toward the same goal.

Public Policy
Providing a national perspective on policy and legal issues pertaining to sexual violence; working collaboratively to develop a vision for the anti-sexual violence legal movement.

Training
Sponsoring the annual Law & Policy Colloquium for sexual assault and dual coalition attorneys; offering trainings on sexual violence legal issues.

Scholarship
Advancing a critical analysis, through research and scholarship, of how the justice system responds to sexual violence.

Fifth Annual Sexual Assault Law & Policy Colloquium

Each year, Staff attorneys from across the country gather annually for the Law & Policy Colloquium for Sexual Assault and Dual Coalition Attorneys. The Colloquium is the only national annual gathering dedicated to providing training to coalition staff attorneys on sexual violence issues. The Colloquium is an unique opportunity for coalition attorneys to discuss the legal issues confronting state coalitions, their member centers and the clients they serve.

The 2005 gathering featured presentations on VAWA III legislation, direct representation by coalitions of sexual assault survivors, and the relationship between privilege, waivers, and confidentiality. Past Colloquia have included training on: sexual assault on campus; developing expert witnesses; sexual assault and tribal issues; protective orders; privilege, confidentiality, and victim privacy; and HIPPA.
