SAAB Tutoring Manual Fall 2009

Welcome back to another year of helping your peers and professors. You have been selected to be a tutor for the fall semester. There are a couple of procedures and policies that you will find in this packet to help you become better acquainted with what is expected of you. I am confident all of you will do your best to help students at Lewis & Clark succeed in the classroom.

Good Luck,

The Basics of How Things are Run

Tutees come to the SAAB Office or SAAB Tutoring Board in search of help.  Posted online is a list of all the tutors in each of the departments.  Tutees are expected to contact the tutors by e-mail to set up a meeting time.  This allows for the flexibility of both the tutee and the tutorŐs busy schedules.  Tutors: you are expected to respond to tutoring requests in a timely manner.

Consider the library when arranging a time and place to meet.  It is the best environment conducive to serious studying and is easily accessible to all.

At each tutoring session, be sure that to complete all parts of the Tutoring Log and do not forget the tuteeŐs signature!

SAAB Tutoring Policy

  1. Tutors must respond to tutoring requests as soon as possible.

  1. A student may only be tutored 2 hours per week in any subject.  This will be checked each month. No double-counting tutees! If you tutor two students for one hour, you should only count one hour. You are paid per hour, not per student. Misrepresentation of this subject is counted as dishonesty in reporting your hours.

  1. Tutoring cannot be required by any professor or department if you hear of it being required please notify the tutoring director.  (Suggested is different than required)

  1. No tutoring will be done starting one week before finals.

  1. Please encourage students to use other help on campus; this includes the Writing Center, Math Skills Center, Physics Help Center, and Chemistry Help Center. As always, our budget is tight.

Tax Forms

Tax Forms:

You must fill out your tax forms (both I-9 and W-4 forms) at Student Financial Services.  When you bring your forms to Student Financial Services bring either a) a valid passport or b) a valid driverŐs license AND Social Security Card or notarized Birth Certificate. You will also have to submit a Student Employment Request form to the SAAB Tutoring Director—these can also be found at Student Financial Services.

Tutoring Logs

Tutoring Logs are found on the SAAB website. Please print off your Tutoring Log for each month and make sure your tutee signs it at every meeting. If you do not turn in a Tutoring Log or it is inaccurate, you will not be paid for your hours.

Due Dates

Timecards and Tutoring Logs are due mid-month.  You will receive an email from the Tutoring Director specifying monthly deadlines.  Again: If you do not include your Tutoring Log, your Time Card will not be approved and you will not be paid.  Late Time Cards will NOT be accepted unless prearranged with the Tutoring Director.  You can turn in your Tutoring Logs to the Tutoring Director or place them in the folder outside the SAAB office door.  The Tutoring Director will then check your Tutoring Log and approve your Timecard.
