Orlo Presents Solo Artist Exhibition The End of Death and Taxes Miller Center for the Humanities Lewis & Clark College October 14-December 7
Orlo, the environmental arts organization based in Portland, has facilitated a new exhibition of artwork currently on display throughout the first floor of the Miller Center for the Humanities on the Lewis & Clark College Campus. Entitled The End of Death and Taxes the exhibit features the work of Portland artist Ryan Pierce. These large-scale acrylic paintings completed between 2006 and 2007 depict humans rebuilding the world after the end of industry.
“These hypothetical landscapes are sourced from specific places, and the narratives are inspired by tenets of the ecological theory of bioregionalism: the idea that a sustainable world could be realized by redrafting human society around the health of natural systems,’ says Pierce. “Actual bioregional practice is a peaceful, quiet endeavor, simply a means of 'living in place.’” The exhibition comes in the middle of Pierce’s larger ongoing project “Rupublika Kaskadija.”
The End of Death and Taxes is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art, currently being shown at the Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art.
Pierce’s work will also be featured in the upcoming special contemporary art issue of The Bear Deluxe Magazine being published by Orlo.
