First Annual Literary Review Poetry Reading Series
Fall and Spring 2005-2006
The Lewis & Clark College Literary Review is a student-based student run organization, which publishes its literary journal annually under the same title. This year the Literary Review will present its First Annual Poetry Reading Series, which will include the noted poets Christopher Locke and Vern Rutsala. The final reading in the series will be from the work of students published in this year’s Literary Review.
All readings are free and open to the public.
Christopher Locke Thursday, February 16, 7 p.m. Frank Manor, Armstrong Lounge
Christopher Locke was born in Laconia, NH in 1968. He received his MFA from Goddard College. His poems and prose have appeared in over 85 publications around the world, including The Literary Review, The Southeast Review, Poetry, Connecticut Review, West Branch, Atlanta Review, Exquisite Corpse, The Sun, Tears in the Fence, (U.K.), Descant, (Canada), The Chattahoochee Review, and on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Chris has received several awards for his poetry, including grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Fundacion Valparaiso (Spain), and OBRAS Artist Center (Portugal). He was a Finalist for the Salmon Run Press National Poetry Book Award, (Co-sponsored by the Academy of American Poets), the New Issues Press Poetry Prize, and the Robert Penn Warren Award. His third collection of poems, Possessed, won the Editor’s Choice Award in Main Street Rag’s National Chapbook Competition. His previous two chapbooks are Slipping Under Diamond Light, (Clamp Down Press—2002), and How To Burn, (Adastra Press—1995). Chris is the Academic Director at Shortridge Academy in Milton, NH.
Vern Rutsala

Vern Rutsala taught at Lewis & Clark College for over forty years. He is the author of twelve collections of poetry, including The Window, Laments, The Journey Begins, and Little-Known Sports. Among the awards for his work are a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA grants, the Juniper Prize, an Oregon Book Award, two Carolyn Kizer Poetry Prizes, the Duncan Lawrie Prize, a Pushcart Prize, the Akron Poetry Prize, the Northwest Poetry Prize, and a Masters Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission. His book The Moment's Equation (Ashland Poetry Press 2005) is a finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry.
