Dr. Byock is Director, The Palliative Care Service, Missoula, Montana, and one of the nation's leading authorities on the ethics and practice of end-of-life care. He has been involved in hospice and palliative care since 1978 when he helped found a hospice home care program for the indigent population served by the university hospital and county clinics of Fresno, California. He served for five years as chair, Ethics Committee, Academy of spice and Palliative Medicine, and for six years on the Ethics Committee of the National Hospice Organization. Dr. Byock has authored numerous articles on the ethics and practice of end-of-life care, appeared on several national television news programs, and is author of Dying Well: The Prospect for Growth at the End of Life.
