Summer Research Program Application 2009
To: Lewis & Clark Science Students
From: Michael Broide, John S. Rogers Science Research Program Director
As a student majoring or planing to major in the sciences, you should consider applying for a research internship for the summer. Research internships are an excellent way to explore whether you might enjoy a career as a scientist. If you plan to apply to graduate school, a research internship could greatly strengthen your application. The John S. Rogers Science Research Program supports student-faculty collaborative research in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, Geological Science, Physics, and Psychology.
In addition to the Rogers Program, you should also investigate the other summer research options listed on the Rogers Home Page. In particular, you should consider the projects supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
A summer research internship is a full-time position lasting 10 weeks (at least 40 hours/week). The start and end dates are negotiated with your faculty mentor, but most internships begin in mid to late May and end 10 weeks later. Students selected for internships will receive a $4000 stipend and a $600 housing allowance, for a total compensation of $4600.
The Rogers Program is open exclusively to Lewis & Clark students. Graduating seniors are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to continuing students.
Students will be selected for internships based on the following factors:
- their enthusiasm for and interest in science
- their background of courses and experience
- their GPA and other evidence of accomplishment
- recommendations from faculty and past employers
- and the outcome of interviews with prospective faculty mentors.
The selection process is competitive, and about half of the applicants are awarded internships.
How to Apply
- Obtain an application form via download (Word document): application.doc
or from Barb Roberts broberts@lclark.edu
- Fill out application, and attach an unofficial copy of your academic transcript. Unofficial transcripts can be printed out from WebAdvisor.
- On the application, you will be asked to list and rank up to four faculty names whose project(s) are of interest to you. Project abstracts are updated in mid February.
- If you are applying early (because you will be on a spring-semester overseas program), you may need to update your application to indicate your project preferences.
Based on the merits of your application, you may be contacted by individual faculty for interviews.
If you have questions about the application process or about your eligibility, please call Michael Broide at x7581 or broide@lclark.edu.
