Students for a Democratic Society
Since forming in the fall of 2006, Lewis & Clark SDS has become an active member of the community. From bringing speakers from Colombia to the Co-op to participating in civil disobedience at Senator Smith’s office to protest the continuation of the Iraq war, from offering Know Your Rights and Legal Observer training to helping to coordinate the March 18 anti-war demonstration in Portland, SDS has been organizing with increasing energy all year. Several students traveled to Tacoma last spring to protest the shipping of military vehicles to Iraq. Last fall LC SDS hosted the first regional SDS convention, with students coming from all over the Northwest; in the spring several of us attended the second convention in Olympia, Washington. LC SDS has worked on sweatshop issues, anti-war organizing, and education. This year, the possibilities are unlimited. Anti-war organizing, immigrants rights groups, and global warming activism are all picking up energy in Portland, and there are incredible opportunities for organizing, networking, and cooperating with other groups in Portland. At Lewis & Clark, the L&C College Support Staff Association is bargaining with the administration for decent wages, and would love student support. Best of all, though, SDS is what you make of it; bring your energy, your ideals, and your desire to learn and we can all work together towards a more just society.
