Getting Involved

Your involvement both on and off campus can help make the difference between you and another scholarship applicant. In addition, it's a great way to know what's going on and have a little bit of fun in the process. So, without further ado, here are some fun activities available at Lewis & Clark with which you can get involved, make a difference on campus, and increase your eligibility for scholarships.

Student Government

Lewis & Clark has a very active student government, and here are just a few opportunities to get involved with them.

  • ASLC Council: A body of your elected student representatives who pass legislation and address student concerns to adminsitration and College committees. They have a number of opportunities to get involved in addition to running for an office. Contact them at x7152 or aslc@lclark.edu.
  • Student Academic Affairs Board: An academic branch of ASLC that addresses student academic concerns, gives out grants to students doing research, performances, going to conferences, or bringing visiting scholars, and adminsters a campuswide free tutoring program.   • General Allocations Board: A student board that gives out money to student groups who are planning projects. Contact them at x7148 or aslcgab@lclark.edu.
  • Charter & Budget Commission: A student board that is in charge of the annual allocation of funds to student groups. Contact them at x7148 or aslcorgs@lclark.edu.

Student Groups

We also have a number of student groups on campus for people with various interests. Here are highlights of just a few. You can check out a comprehensive list of LC's student groups at http://www.lclark. edu/~activity/groups. html.

  • Students Organized for Activities: Runs weekly movie nights, brings in bands and performers, and plans activities for students to enjoy. Contact them at sofa@lclark.edu.
  • Student Media: Our campus has many student media with which to get involved including thestudent newspaper the Pioneer Log, the video productions group LCTV, the radio station KLC 104.1 FM, or the many journals we have here at LC: Literary Review, Synergia, The Meridian, Polyglot, Yiem Kimtah (Yearbook), and .   • Students Engaged in Eco-Defense: A group of students dedicated to protecting the environment, raising awareness about such issues, and lobbying government officials. Contact them at seed@lclark.edu.
  • Womyn's Center: A group concerned with gender & abortion rights, rape & AIDS awareness, and the sponsors of Take Back the Night. Contact them at x7126 or womynctr@lclark.edu.
  • Free University: LC students, faculty, and staff sharing their interests with others by teaching and taking classes on a variety of topics. Contact them at freeu@lclark.edu.

Volunteer & Job Opportunities

LC offers many opportunities to get involved in the outside community as well. Here are a few of these great opportunities.

  • Local Volunteer Opportunities: Portland provides a lot of opportunities to get involved with the community. You can go to Potluck in the Park to serve meals to the homeless, work with Start Making A Reader Today to build students' reading skills, tutor immigrants of various nationalities, or work with Habitat for Humanity to build low income housing. There are many more such opportunities. Check them out at the Student Leadership and Service office in the basement of Templeton.
  • Summer Work: If you plan to stay in the Portland area for the summer, there are many job opportunities for you. From on-campus jobs to temporary staffing agencies to summer camps, there are plenty of ways for you to have some fun and make a few dollars. Student Employment has an online database that you can search for summer jobs.
  • On-Campus Jobs: There are also many opportunities for employment on campus. From being a tour guide for Admissions to staffing the circulation desk in the library, you can certainly make a few dollars while you go to school. Most jobs on campus are work study, but there are some that don't require it. For more information, email Student Employment at stuemp@lclark.edu.
  • Internships: Internships provide great hands-on work experience in a variety of different fields. This can include on-campus internships, department-specific internships, business internships, or internships with nonprofits. Check out some of these great opportunities on the Career Center's website or email them at career@lclark.edu for more information.

Ethnic & Multicultural Opportunities

There are lots of ways to get involved with various ethnic & multicultural activities as well. Such activities can broaden your horizons and give you a different outloook on life. Here are a few of these opportunities.

  • Multicultural Affairs: The Office of Multicultural Affairs provides a support base for the ethnic students on campus. They also plan many activities centering around ethnic awareness. If you'd like to get involved, contact them at x7051.
  • International Students of Lewis & Clark: ISLC represents the 7% of our student body who are international students. They plan a number of multicultural awareness activities, but by far their largest event is the International Fair in the Spring. You can get invovled with this by helping with a country booth, performing in the talent show, or helping cook interntaional cuisine.   • Ethnic & Multicultural Student Groups: We have many student groups that are interested in bringing awareness to various cultures and ethnicities. These include the Black student union, Hawai'i Club, Chinese Club, German Club, Gringos y Latinos Unidos, and many others. Some of their activities include movie festivals, ethnic food nights, Black History Month, and the Lu'au.
  • LC Overseas & Off-Campus Studies Programs: LC offers some of the best overseas and off-campus studies programs in the country. They're a great way to broaden your horizons and add a little hands-on learning to your college experience. They also provide great material for scholarship essays. Having gone on such a program will make you more attractive to committees and will give you breadth & depth of subject matter for essays.   • Model United Nations: This provides an opportunity to experience how the UN operates. This class includes participation in various MUN conferences and can give you a head start on future careers in International Affairs.   • Mentor/Mentee Program: Gives incoming students who don't fit match the "traditional Lewis & Clark student" an opportunity to meet continuing students who may have come from similar situations. Find out more about it at x7051.

Academic Departments

The academic departments and programs also provide a number of ways to make your education here a bit more interactive.

  • Symposia, Colloquia, & Readings: Many departments have such events. They're great ways to see current research and network with professionals. You can often get involved in planning such events or bringing in speakers for them, too.
  • Search Committees: Every time a new faculty member is hired, a student sits on the search committee. This is a great way to help define the future of your department by helping hire new professors. You can also get involved with these searches even if you're not on the committee by attending talks and classes.
  • Research Opportunities: In many departments, you can do cutting edge research with professors over the summer or during the school year. You can often even do your own independent research.
  • Theatre: We have a very active Theatre department that does a number of productions throughout the year. These include main stage productions, the One Acts, Once Upon a Weekend, and others. And you don't even have to be a Theatre major to get involved!

Athletic, Outdoors, & Recreational Activities

It's always great to keep yourself physically fit and have a little fun, too. Here are a few activities that can help you expend a bit of energy and enjoy yourself.

  • PE/Athletics: Our PE/A department provides a number of sports with which you can get involved. These include varsity and intramural sports as well as various athletics classes. You can also check out the games to support our LC athletes.
  • Athletic Clubs & Club Sports: We have numerous athletic clubs and club sports as well including paddling, Ninjitsu, lacrosse, soccer, ultimate frisbee, sailing, and many others. Find out more about them by emailing aslcorgs@lclark.edu.
  • College Outdoors: CO leads a number of outdoors trips throughout the year. Depending on the time of year, there might be skiing trips, hiking trips, rafting trips, and others. Oftentimes, students can even lead these trips. Contact CO at x7116 or outdoors@lclark.edu for more info.
  • Dance & the Dance Extravaganza: The Dance program is a part of the Theatre department and is very active. The primary offerings are in ballet and contemprary dance. Every year, the program also sponsors the completely student run & performed Dance Extranvaganza, showcasing student choreography and dance. Dance is a great way to show your passion.
