College offers career services for students and alumni

Lewis & Clark College offers extensive services for students and alumni who are searching for a job for the first time or who are seeking to improve their careers.

The office helps students, alumni and College employees learn career-development skills. Call the director for information about career-development workshops or to schedule an individual appointment for career counseling.

The office helps individuals learn how to plan their careers, to set goals, to tackle motivational issues and to solve problems; identify areas of professional interest through career testing and test interpretation; learn to write résumés, cover letters and other application materials; to develop portfolios; to interview and negotiate; and to use professional networks; seek potential employers and fill out applications via the Internet; plan for postgraduate degree employment; identify techniques to maintain a career, advance a career or move into a new career; and apply to graduate school; write graduate-school application essays and practice for interviews.

The center links students with on-campus and off-campus job opportunities, internships, community service and other experiences to foster educational and professional development.

The center: oversees the College’s Federal Work-Study program; posts all federal work-study positions available on campus and provides workshops and training materials for supervisors who hire students; posts nonwork-study jobs available to students on campus and off campus, including part-time, full-time and temporary positions; promotes and coordinates opportunities for students to participate in community-service projects; posts internships available to students on campus, in Portland and nationwide; provides workshops to help students learn how to find internships and to make the most of them to foster their educational development; arranges (in concert with the Office of Alumni Relations) for students to talk to alumni about their careers, to shadow alumni on the job and to tour the companies where alumni work; announces full-time job opportunities and opportunities to interview with on-campus recruiters; and directs students to resources to help them write résumés and cover letters and to search for jobs.

The law school and the graduate school also provide career services.
