Math ContestCollege team wins top honors in international math contest

For the second year in a row, Lewis & Clark students won top honors in an international mathematical modeling competition, sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications.

A Lewis & Clark team was one of 83 that tackled the interdisciplinary problem. It was one of only three teams to receive the highest rating.

Walesa, Lech smallNobel Prize-winner Lech Walesa to speak

Lech Walesa, Nobel Peace Prize winner and former president of Poland, will address graduating seniors and their families, Sunday, May 6, at10 a.m., in Pamplin Sports Center.

"One of the dominant figures of European history during the past two decades, Lech Walesa is celebrated universally for his contributions to freedom and democracy," states Michael Mooney, president of Lewis & Clark College.

College to construct new residence halls

In May, the College will break ground on three apartment-style residence halls.

"Our student body is made up primarily of young people who are experiencing the formative transition between late adolescence and early adulthood," says Jane Atkinson, vice president and provost of the College. "We believe that students this age, who are pursuing the kind of education we offer, thrive best through total immersion in the collegiate experience.

The Sherman Fairchild Foundation has awarded Lewis & Clark a $498,300 grant for scientific equipment.

"The grant will enrich laboratory courses for prospective science majors and will foster an appreciation of scientific inquiry among nonmajors," says Gary Reiness, dean of mathematical and natural sciences.
