John Bolton Speaks at International Affairs Symposium
John Bolton, former U.S. representative to the United Nations, headlines the lineup of speakers at Lewis & Clark’s 46th annual International Affairs Symposium, taking place April 7-9 at the Lewis & Clark campus.
Bolton will speak on Monday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Council Chambers in Templeton Campus Center. The former Bush administration official will engage in a point-counterpoint discussion with veteran diplomat Robert Krueger in a session titled “UNtangling Interests: Questioning the Motivation for Humanitarian Intervention.”
President Bush in 2005 nominated Bolton, then-undersecretary of state for arms control, to serve as ambassador to the U.N., but opposition by Senate Democrats, and a subsequent filibuster, thwarted his confirmation. The President instead used his recess appointment powers to name Bolton permanent representative to the U.N., a position in which he served until December 2006.
Bolton is now a senior fellow with the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, where his research areas include foreign policy and international organizations.
The symposium, the longest-running student event of its type in the United States, will also address such issues as global health, environmental protection, human trafficking, and regime stability over the three days.
