Implemented Projects
Here are some of the student-initiated projects that have been implemented. Storm Water Collection Planters
In the Spring of 2002, Liz Safran's Geology 280 class worked on plans to collect the storm water from the roof of Howard Hall in storm water collection planters. These planters served to filter runoff. The water is then piped to the reflection pool where it can be stored and used for irrigation, reducing our dependence on well and municipal water supplies. Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Students Engaged in Eco Defense (SEED) campaigned for three years to cut our campus's greenhouse gas emissions. Because of their efforts Lewis & Clark College became the first school to achieve Kyoto Protocol Compliance. Article, SEED Website
Howard Hall Educational Signs
These signs were designed by an environmental studies footprint group in the spring of 2002. They were put up during construction of the Howard Center for Social Sciences to educate the Lewis & Clark community about its green features. The Signs, Howard Center for Social Sciences
Paper Use On Campus
Due to various efforts by the student body, the use of recycled paper in campus copy machines and the practice of printing double-sided has been spreading across campus. From 1999 to 2003, the Lewis & Clark community cut its copy usage down by a third.
Campus Trail Bridge
This bridge, situated behind the pool house, was built due to student efforts to make the trails in the forests around campus more safe and accessible. Website
Environmental Zoning Issues
The forests and streams surrounding Lewis & Clark College have been designated as environmental protection zones by the city of Portland. Several student projects have studied these zones. Biology 141 students have looked at the water quality in its streams, and a group of summer interns mapped stream locations.
