Graduate School Northwest Writing Institute Workshops Translations: Writing Between Cultures

Writing Culture: Translations

July 21 - 25, 2008, 9am - 4pm

How to language and culture frame our worlds? As witness to different cultures, how do we communicate our vision? What is found as well as "lost in translation" as we move between different languages and cultures? In this workshop, we'll explore linguistic and cultural translation in literary works, in social life, and in our writing. We'll write from our own cultural frameworks, and we'll explore diverse Portland settings. Visitors to the workshop will include Paul Merchant, a poet and translator; Susan Fletcher, a chilred's book author; and Ahmed Ali, an Iraqi translator recently resettled in Portland. Background in translation or blingual fluency is not nexessary. Anyone eager to delve into language and culture is welcome.

The House of Translators

In addition, on Wednesday afternoon, July 23, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., we will host an informal gathering for translators and interested friends. We feel that translators are the unsung heroes of our literary and social worlds. Whether you labor in solitude or translate as part of your work as a teacher, writer, or social service provider, you are welcome. Join us for a wine and cheese reception and this first gathering of "The House of Translators." Students enrolled in the "Translations" workshop are encouraged but not required to attend.
