2007 Rogers Summer Science Program a Success

Students at Lewis & Clark College spent the summer conducting research in collaboration with faculty members as part of the John S. Rogers Science Research Program. Nearly 40 students discussed their research in fields including physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics and computer science during a series of brown bag talks held in June and July.

The John S. Rogers Science Research Program promotes collaborative research in the mathematical and natural sciences and provides the framework and financing for more than a dozen student-faculty research projects each summer at Lewis & Clark. The program gives science majors the opportunity to work together, full time, for 10 weeks each summer. More information on the research program, including abstracts of the research projects, can be found at http://www.lclark. edu/dept/sumsci/ .

Under the Microscope

Lewis & Clark's strong research programs for student scientists were featured in this Newsweek article. The author discusses the work of the Autumn Lab with geckos, but also addresses some of the of the bigger issues in science education, writing, "The results are impressive: according to the National Science Foundation, small colleges enroll only about 8 percent of all undergraduate students, yet between 1996 and 2002, they produced 15.5 percent of all future Ph.D.s in science and engineering.
