Summer Studies: Inservice Master of Education
Lewis & Clark’s Master of Education: Curriculum and Instruction degree is now offered in a full-time summer studies format. The Curriculum and Instruction Program is designed for teachers and individuals who seek advanced study in education. Students study with the same nationally recognized faculty that teach Lewis & Clark graduate classes during the academic year, yet coursework is conducted only during the summer months when working educators have time to commit to full-time study.
The summer program is also appropriate for out-of-state teachers seeking a master's degree, elementary teachers, language and literacy or reading endorsement candidates, ESOL/Bilingual endorsement candidates, and teachers in private schools or community colleges.
Program participants also have the option of earning an endorsement or an Oregon continuing teaching license while participating in the program. A two-summer, stand-alone endorsement program is also available in reading and ESOL/bilingual education. Summer Studies with the Northwest Writing Institute
Practicing educators with a specific interest in writing and how it may inform their teaching as well as deepen their learning about academic subjects, their students, and their own calling will find the Summer Studies Program offers a wide array of elective writing courses taught by the staff of the Northwest Writing Institute. Courses include poetry, fiction, memoir, essay, and a host of thematic writing workshops.
Admissions
Applicants to Lewis & Clark’s Department of Teacher Education are evaluated on the basis of the depth and breadth of their academic background, the strength of their recommendations, the quality of their teaching experience, written essays, and the results of standardized tests and/or a portfolio. Program participants may take up to 8 semester hours prior to being accepted into the program. Summer 2009 semester course schedules and registration forms may be available on-line at education.lclark.edu/dept/gradreg/. Lewis & Clark summer courses are offered in three sessions. Students enrolled in summer studies M.Ed. and endorsement programs typically take coursework offered in summer sessions II & III.

A Sense of Place
Lewis & Clark College is located six miles from lively downtown Portland in a woodland residential setting that joins a former rural estate and former convent. This heritage makes the campus an ideal place for quiet reflection and rich creative practice.
