Mathematics Education at Lewis & Clark

Lewis & Clark prepares mathematics teachers to be leaders and innovators in a field that must perpetually balance tradition with reform. We offer a distinctive course of study, premiere classroom and local resources, and an outstanding faculty. Our graduates make thoughtful decisions in the face of ethical and organizational dilemmas of schooling in order to serve all students well.

We prepare mathematics teachers to:

  • Present mathematics as a coherent, reasoned, and relevant human activity

  • Plan for exploration, conjecture, and surprise as part of the natural ecology of learning

  • Honor the diversity of students' backgrounds, ideas, and approaches

  • Encourage wonder and discovery

  • Communicate the aesthetic elegance and intellectual power of inquiry
