Kyoto Protocol
The first step on the road to Kyoto compliancy is producing a report that accurately documents Lewis & Clark's greenhouse gas emissions. Since 2000 Lewis & Clark has been calculating its GHG emission using an excel program created by Clean Air Cool Planet. The method used is fairly straightforward, however it is often time consuming to collect and enter in all of the data neccessary to make the calculation. After an emission figure has been generated, the college then must decide what if anything it wants to do curb its emissions. In 2003 Lewis & Clark was able to claim that it was Kyoto Compliant through the purchase of carbon offsets. For more on Lewis & Clark's brief flirtation with Kyoto Compliance please refer to several articles published by the campus newspaper, faculty, and students. In 2004 and 2005 the school did not renew their commitment to purchase carbon offsets, and therefore has not been able to claim Kyoto compliancy. The 2005-2006 GHG emission calculation is in the works. After it's completion, the Sustainability Council hopes to facilitate discussion and brainstorm ideas about how Lewis & Clark might move towards Kyoto compliancy.
