Lewis & Clark Law School Hosts Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Justice Anthony Kennedy at Federal Judicial Center Conference

PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept 23, 2008)—Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Justice Anthony Kennedy were among the keynote speakers at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Federal Judicial Center, hosted by Lewis & Clark Law School in September. This event was co-sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center and the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.

The conference—also featuring a keynote address by former Acting U.S. Solicitor General Walter Dellinger—covered topics including the impact of science and technology on the law, balancing national security and individual liberties in a time of terrorism, and the public's perception of the federal courts.

"We were thrilled and honored to host such a momentous event and such an unparalleled array of jurists and scholars," Law School Dean Robert Klonoff said. "Our selection as the venue for the conference is a ringing endorsement of our leadership in legal education. We welcomed this opportunity to showcase our school."

Also participating were FJC Director Barbara Rothstein and former directors Fern Smith, Rya Zobel, and William Schwarzer. Participating scholars included, among others, Erwin Chemerinsky, founding dean of the University of California, Irvine, Law School; Drew Days III, Yale Law School and former U.S. Solicitor General; Henry Greely, Stanford Law School; Laurie Levenson, Loyola Law School Los Angeles; and Judith Resnik, Yale Law School. Dean Klonoff chaired the program and introduced all of the keynote speakers and panels. In addition, Lewis & Clark Law School professors Ed Brunet and Paula Abrams moderated some of the panels.

Other topics covered at the conference included the history of the Federal Judicial Center, the costs of increasingly complex civil litigation, the changing role of the district judge in an era of alternative dispute resolution and guilty pleas, the growth of pro se litigation, the changing nature of criminal litigation, and appellate court issues and innovations.
