Cleve Jones, founder of the NAMES Project and AIDS Memorial Quilt, pioneered the HIV/AIDS movement in the United States. Jones founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation in 1983. His idea to visualize the number of AIDS related deaths lead to the creation of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in 1987 which introduced the AIDS epidemic to mainstream America. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is currently the largest community arts project, commemorating the lives of over 80,000 Americans killed by AIDS. Cleve Jones has met with many distinguished heads of states, including President Bush, President Clinton and Nelson Mandela, as well as participated in many national and international AIDS research projects and conferences. In 2000, Jones
published his book “Stitching a Revolution” about the AIDS Memorial Quilt and the AIDS revolution in America and is currently working as a consultant on the Gus Van Sant film, "MILK," currently vin production in San Francisco, with Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, James Franco as Harvey's partner Scott Smith and Emile Hirsch as himself.

Founded in 1987, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is the largest community arts project in the world. Each "block" of The AIDS Memorial Quilt measures approximately twelve feet square, and a typical block consists of eight individual three foot by six foot panels sewn together. There are over 40,000 colorful panels that memorialize the life of a person lost to AIDS.
