Evidenced-Based Approaches in the Engagement of African-American Youth, Families, and Subsystems

Angelo Adson, MSS, MLSP, MBA, LSW, Clinical Director, The Bridge, Philadelphia, PA.

What are the factors that influence African American youth, families and sub-systems to engage in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders treatment? This plenary will focus on how evidenced-based practice, applied from a systemic and strength-based approach, engages African American youth and their families in the treatment process.

Participants will learn to (1) recognize, assess and apply factors of resiliency and its importance in the engagement process; (2) perform systemic assessments to analyze strengths and barriers to community sub-system involvement and (3) examine relevant evidenced-based approaches for the engagement of African American family systems.

Forgiveness and Recovery: Helping Clients Overcome Resentment, Guilt, and Victimhood

Gordon Lindbloom, Ph.D, Professor, Lewis and Clark College Portland OR

In this workshop we will clarify what forgiveness is, and what it is not, how we can help clients decide whether they want to pursue this course, and if they do, specific methods for realizing their hopes. The workshop will be interactive with time allotted to working on examples and cases brought by counselors attending the workshop.

Breaking the "No Solution, No Problem” Dynamic Associated with FASD: Resolving Barriers to Identification and Barriers to Prevention

Diane V. Malbin, Owner FASCETS/NOFAS, Portland,OR.

If a problem such as FASD is not named, can it be prevented? The first part of the five-hour track 1) introduces the design, process and outcomes from a successful three-year FASD interventive study, 2) outlines the neurobehavioral model on which project activities were based, 3) provides case studies demonstrating application of techniques grounded in neurobehavioral theory and 4) discusses the process of implementation. We will then explore the current social context within which FASD is emerging as a social issue, identifying the source of some of the most common historical, cultural, and intellectual barriers to identification and prevention. The goal of this discussion is to normalize, clarify and begin to resolve personal/professional barriers, and increase comfort in addressing FASD.

Adolescent Girls in the Juvenile Justice System with Co-occurring Disorders

Fred Dyer, MA, CADC, Owner, Dyer Trainings, Chicago, IL.

General prevalence rates indicate that adolescent females are coming into contact with the juvenile justice system in increasing numbers. Research indicates that female convictions related to gang activity, sexual misconduct, and drug offenses have quadrupled in recent years. Juvenile girls are most often arrested for non-violent drug related crimes but many are entering the system with serious medical and psychological needs related to high-risk sexual behavior, substance abuse, and violence. Many complex issues face adolescent girls as they traverse various systems in their lives. This skill-building workshop will enable probation officers, substance abuse counselors, mental health workers and correctional personnel to work more effectively in the juvenile justice system with adolescent girls and their co-occurring disorders.

We will present a brief overview of the Metamorphosis Project and we will discuss how we are currently working to implement the Assertive Continuing Care Protocol in order to achieve positive treatment outcomes for homeless youth in Portland, Oregon. Recovery Mentors and Recovery Transition Advocates will assist in presenting this information as both consumers of these services and staff of the project who offer a unique perspective from a youth point of view.
