Celia Headley ’73
If a tree falls

Philosophy major Celia Headley ’73 has spent her career exploring solutions to reforestation. Starting as a treeplanter, she developed expertise as a member of a worker-owned forestry cooperative, eventually becoming an independent contractor in technical forestry fieldwork – working throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Alliance of Forest Worker and Harvesters, a multicultural organization promoting environmental and economic justice for industry workers, and is also active with the National Network of Forest Practitioners and the National Community Forestry Center.

Sule Issifu ’77
Out of Africa

A few years ago, the Arts & Entertainment Network made a documentary about Sule Issifu ’77 titled “The Man Who Would be Chief.” Sule’s amazing journey carried this son of the chief of the Mamprusi tribe from Ghana to the United States. Here, he studied, married Lydia Chilcott ‘77, started a family, and built a career in human resources and a life in Arizona. Then his father died, and Sule faced the dilemma of how to help the people of his tribe, who implored him to become the new chief, and to protect and ensure the best possible future for his American family. Ultimately, Sule was crowned chief and remained in the US. He founded the Mamprusi Development Fund, Inc., a non-profit committed to improving the standard of living of the 250,000-member tribe in Ghana.

Mary Hull-Caballero ’84
Kids’ Public Policy Think Tank

In the mid-90’s, Mary Hull-Caballero ’84 began a research project that would take her into a dark labyrinth of the bureaucratic intricacies surrounding public policy and government funding formulas. Her work not only led to changes in childcare funding allocations in the state of Texas, where she has lived since graduating from LC, but it also gave rise to an organization that will have a lasting impact on the people of El Paso. Mary co-founded a non-profit called Community Scholars, whose goal is to immerse students in complex community issues, create an opportunity for them to advance themselves and the community through their research and participation in shaping public policy, and inspire them to remain connected to the community as the next generation’s leaders.

dan_balmerDan Balmer ’80
Jazz Guitarist

Dan Balmer has been infatuated with the guitar for as long as he can remember. At the age of 7, he would grab a tennis racket and pretend to play along to the music of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Graduating to the real thing, he says, was like his redemption. “I was 11 years old when I got my first guitar,” says Balmer. “That’s the day my life took on new meaning.”

Balmer took classical guitar lessons for about three years, and went through high school playing the music of Credence Clearwater Revival and the Byrds. When he graduated at 16, Lewis & Clark College was the natural choice for him. Learn more about Dan Balmer ’80

Pianist and Composer

Sophia Serghi was the first student ever to come to Lewis & Clark from Cyprus. That is not, however, the only way she distinguished herself while at the College. Attending as a Fulbright and Presidential Scholar, she went on to receive Cheney Foundation Scholarships and the Rena Ratte Award (given to an outstanding graduating senior), and to earn master’s and doctor degrees in music at Columbia University on a full Mellon Fellowship. aaron_meyerAaron Meyer ’95
Concert Rock Violinist

“We’re in uncharted territory,” says violinist Aaron Meyer of the musical style that he has created with guitarist and music partner Bill Lamb ’88. “Record stores don’t know where to put our CDs because we’ve created our own thing.”

Doing his own thing is what Meyer is all about. Although he started on a strictly classical path, he has blazed a trail that is uniquely his own, blending classical roots with rock influences in a style he describes as “concert rock violin.” Learn more about Aaron Meyer ’95

In Search of More Alumni Explorers?

The Lewis & Clark College Alumni Board has launched a new Web site to recognize alumni who exemplify the spirit of exploration in various fields of endeavor. The board adopted the metaphor of exploration as a link to the College's commemoration of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

"The individuals we're showcasing have a wide range of talents, experiences, and achievements," says Kim Hansink '86, president of the Alumni Board. "All of them have created their own unique paths after launching their expeditions from Palatine Hill."
