Slideshow: Lewis & Clark Professor Creates First Master’s Degree Program in War-Torn Afghanistan

Early this year, Lewis & Clark Professor of Education Zaher Wahab worked for four months at Kabul Education University to help create Afghanistan’s first master’s degree program for teacher education faculty. Better teachers and access to education could, Wahab believes, help “save this savaged country; it is hoping against hope—but you have to believe it will make a difference.”

Video: Multi-Institutional Exchange Model Trains Next Generation of Environmental Leaders

As the need for solutions to environmental challenges becomes more urgent, Jim Proctor, professor and director of Lewis & Clark’s environmental studies program, is creating a national model for training the next generation of environmental policy makers. In this video, Proctor and student researchers from Lewis & Clark and other colleges describe the training and the interdisciplinary projects students are undertaking.

Student Puts Lewis & Clark in Top Five on “Green Vote” Initiative

This fall, sophomore Rachel Young, president of the environmental organization Students Engaged in Eco-Defense, urged her peers to make clean-energy solutions a priority in their voting decisions. At the end of October, Young had gathered more than 750 signatures. Her recruitment efforts, part of a national movement to encourage students to think about clean energy, placed Lewis & Clark among the top five U.S. colleges in terms of percentage of student participation in the initiative.

Podcast: First-Year Student Navigates Intersections of Faith, Culture, and Education

Each year, Lewis & Clark enrolls more than 100 Third Culture Kids, students who spent a significant amount of time living abroad as children. First-year student Louise Trueheart, a self-identified TCK, was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Toronto and Paris before she attended high school in Connecticut. In this interview, Trueheart describes her religious journey at Lewis & Clark and her opportunity last year to speak at a Paris church service attended by President Bush.

Video: U.S. Professor of the Year Jerusha Detweiler-Bedell Discusses Transforming Students From Bystanders to Participants

Associate Professor of Psychology Jerusha Detweiler-Bedell was recently named U.S. Professor of the Year for an undergraduate college by two of the leading organizations in education—the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This special Web feature includes a video excerpt of Jerusha’s acceptance speech at the recent awards luncheon and a testimonial by her former student Shannon Brady B.A. ’06.
