The Albany Quadrangle
Fall 2006 Edition

Welcome to our first version of the The Albany Quadrangle, the newsletter of the Lewis & Clark Albany Society. Like most of the projects and activities of the Society, we are not quite sure where this is headed, and we'll need your feedback to let us know if we're reaching our objective.

Good times had by all at Albany Society Barbecue

Nearly 80 attendees enjoyed renewing college relationships at the first annual Albany Society Barbecue held August 16 in the Grape Arbor near the pool. A few alumni shared their thoughts about the event with our Quadrangle reporter on the scene:

Bob Graves '51: "The barbecue is a great idea. I'm really pleased to see the Albany Society taking on various projects to get alumni together. It gives more meaning to the Society."

Shirley (Bender) Hanna '50: "The event was well done. Mark and I enjoyed it very much. Nice visiting with old friends we hadn't seen for a long time. A pleasant surprise in the beautiful rose gardens was discovering my name inscribed in stone with the names of the other L&C May Queens."

Marv Bolstad '52: "Had an excellent time, with the barbecue having a casual, very friendly atmosphere. The crowd mixed well and it was easy to talk with alums. Good job."

Eloise (Wood) Cole '52: "So nice to see alums and have an opportunity to talk with old friends. The food was delicious. And the people from the alumni office were very welcoming, friendly to everyone. They did marvelous work on the barbecue."

This pleasant, relaxing afternoon, besides lots of visiting, featured eating. Food fare included chicken, cornbread, a variety of salads, and plenty of cookies, catered by Bon Appetit. Alumni met a number of the college staff: Phil Akers, vice president for institutional advancement; Clark Yeager, director of physical education and athletics; Chris Sulages, head football coach.

Also attending from California was Bob Odell, son of former L&C President Morgan Odell. Special thanks goes to the Albany Society Board’s event chairman Janet Eastman '49, assisted by Janice Cox '55; and to college alumni staff for their top-notch preparation and handling of the barbecue: Erin Ogle, acting director, Stephen LeBoutillier '00, assistant director, Flavia Arsenault '06, administrative assistant, and Meredith Price '07, student intern.

The successful event, with a good first-year crowd, convinced the Albany Society’s Board to continue the summer Barbecue in 2007.

footballPioneer football reenergized

A reenergized football program is emerging on Palatine Hill, thanks to extensive leadership by Lewis & Clark president Thomas Hochstettler and the positive outcome of a recent study conducted to determine the sport's future. Following years of unsuccessful football culminating in a very low player turnout in 2005 with a shortened four-game season, the comprehensive study carefully analyzed the College's football program.

The Pioneers start a rebuilding effort in 2006 with a full nine-game schedule, a new head coach, new athletic director, and a lot of support from the college administration. Recognizing that sustained hard work and dedication will be necessary to turnaround L&C’s gridiron fortunes, the new football program’s direction and spirited start bodes well for success in the long-term. Albany Society members are encouraged to help support the Pioneers and return to campus and enjoy some football in ’06.

Athletics department welcomes new staff

Clark Yeager named new Director of Athletics

Appointment of the new Director of Physical Education and Athletics at Lewis & Clark in July provides the college with important new sports leadership. During his 40 years of athletic experience, Clark Yeager was athletic director at universities in Pennsylvania and California. Most recently he was the athletic director at Kutztown University, Pa., and earlier at California State University at Chico where he also was a highly successful head swimming coach. The success of the Kutztown's athletic teams rose significantly under his leadership, including finishing second in the 2004 All-Sports trophy competition in the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference, the highest of seven NCAA Eastern Division schools. Before Kutztown, and in addition to his responsibilities as athletic director at CSU Chico, he was the men's swimming and diving coach from 1976 – 1991, leading the teams to 13 conference championships and was never lower than seventh at the NCAA championships. Yeager earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at CSU Chico.

Chris Sulages, new Head Football Coach

Energized Chris Sulages, who leads the Pioneers on the rebuilding trail this fall, has extensive football coaching experience. The first-year head coach was offensive-line coach at Lewis & Clark for two years and was offensive coordinator in 2005. Prior to L&C, Sulages coached in California at Cal State Northridge, Occidental, University of San Diego, and coached in Utah at Weber State where he was an offensive lineman. He also has coached in a pro league in Prague. Sulages and his assistants, after a busy recruiting time, have a larger player turnout and started the season September 9 at Occidental in Los Angeles. Please support the Pioneers at the Homecoming game on October 7 vs Menlo College.

Historic Gatehouse named Alumni House

At the Roaring 50's era reunion in May 2006, President Hochstettler announced that the Gatehouse would become the Alumni House. The college alumni staff has already moved into the venerable, charming building which has been emblematic of L&C since the college’s early days. Although there is an existing small area for an alumni lounge, further study is being considered on how best to utilize the facility which is on the National Register for Historic Places. Stay tuned for developments.
