Just for transfer studentsTransfer students bring a welcome maturity and diversity to Lewis & Clark. The approximately 60 new transfer students who enroll each year are a very important part of the College's entering student group. Congratulations on your transfer admission! Below, we have included some questions that are frequently asked by admitted transfer students, along with their answers. You'll also find plenty of applicable information on the main Inside L&C page. If you have questions, e-mail our transfer coordinator: transfer@lclark.edu
Will I get credit for all coursework I've done at my previous institution(s)? When will I find out how my transfer credit will be applied toward graduation requirements? What is my class standing?Along with your letter of admission, you received a preliminary transfer credit evaluation for courses you had completed at the time of admission, which included your projected class standing.
After the College receives your reservation deposit, you will receive an evaluation from the registrar's office stating which courses will be applicable toward our General Education requirements. To determine whether previous coursework will satisfy major requirements, you should contact the chair of the department or program. For more details about transfer credit evaluation, go to the Transfer portion of the Admissions section in our catalog.
Class standing is determined by the total number of credits transferred, as follows: 0-28 semester credits = first-year standing 29-60 semester credits = sophomore standing 61-68 semester credits = junior standing.
In order to be awarded a Lewis & Clark degree, students must fulfill the College's academic residency requirement by completing at least 60 semester credits at Lewis & Clark out of the 128 semester credits required for the degree. Thus, a maximum of 68 semester credits may be transferred from other institutions. If you are transferring from an institution that is on a quarter system, be aware that one quarter credit equals .67 semester credits.
Transfer students must fulfill all Lewis & Clark graduation requirements as outlined in the College catalog, including the General Education requirements. For more information, e-mail the College Registrar at reg@lclark.edu.
Is financial aid available to transfer students? What about scholarships?Need-based financial assistance is available to transfer students; financial aid awards will depend on eligibility. All students applying for financial aid must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS PROFILE by the priority deadline of March 1 for full consideration.
Transfer students are also eligible for our merit-based Dean's Scholarships and our Leadership and Service Awards. Dean's Scholarships range in amount from $4,000 to $10,000 per year, and are renewable based on continued academic success. The Leadership and Service Awards are $5,000 per year, and are also renewable based on academic success and demonstrated campus involvement.
Applicants do not need to submit additional documents to be considered for the Dean's Scholarships or the Leadership and Service Awards. If you are a recipient of one of these scholarships, you will be notified along with your offer of admission.
Transfer students with exceptional talent in music or speech and debate may qualify for one of our Music or Forensics Scholarships. Award amounts for these scholarships vary. For more information, contact the chair of the music department (503-768-7460 or music@lclark.edu) or Steve Hunt, director of forensics (503-768-7617 or hunt@lclark.edu).
Is campus housing available to transfer students? Do I need to live on campus?Lewis & Clark is a residential community and all new students, including transfers, are required to live on campus their first two years (four semesters). Transfer students are exempt from this policy if they are entering with at least 28 semester credits, living with their parent(s) in the Portland area, are married, have a dependent, or are 21 years of age or older at the time of enrollment.
