Lewis & Clark campus secure following incident

Posted April 18, 2007

(Portland, Ore.) – At approximately 9:15 a.m., a Lewis & Clark College employee spotted a student on the undergraduate campus wearing an ammunition belt. Campus officials implemented security procedures and notified Portland police. Campus Safety officers apprehended the student at 10:09 a.m., as campus officials were on the verge of a campus lockdown.

Campus Safety officers found that the student was not carrying live ammunition or any weapons.

“Given the recent events at Virginia Tech, campus security took this sighting with extreme earnestness and acted accordingly. The ammunition belt has been confiscated and appropriate further steps with regard to the student’s conduct are being taken,” President Thomas J. Hochstettler said in an all-campus email this morning. “I want to assure you that we are taking every step to ensure the highest level of security that we can achieve.”
