Real Life, by Teal Takayama Tuesday, April 25, 2006Pulling Through
I decided that this weekend would consist of no work, and all play. Well, it kind of worked out that way at least.
Friday I spent hosting perspective students for lunch. Since I only have a morning class on Fridays, I spent the rest of the afternoon on South Campus, climbing trees and enjoying the sunshine. The best part was falling asleep on the lawn…that, and seeing the beehive, which was a first for me. Got absolutely no work done, but it was definitely a stress reliever. The good weather is making it really easy to de-stress. Unfortuantely, it makes it really easy to get distracted too…
On Saturday I made the trek to Reed College, which is about 20 minutes away. Reed is small and private and quirky like Lewis and Clark, but has a much more intense academic focus. Anyway, we went there to see the L&C rugby team play their first (and last) game of the season. I don’t really know rugby rules, but they did score-- which means a lot. I think they lost by a very small margin, something like two tries. Which is good considering the team was new. It was just fun to hang out in the sun (again) and see some of my friends play. One of them broke their collarbone though, and had to go to the hospital. He’s okay now.
Then the sobering day of Sunday rolled around, reminding us all of the work that looms ahead. I spent a lot of Sunday complaining. However, I did go see the last baseball game of the season, against Whitman. My friend Eric was the starting pitcher for that game. So yeah, the Pioneers dominated. When I left the game at the bottom of the 6th inning, they were up 12-3. Sweet.
Judging by the past two days, this week has been turning out to be pretty manageable. A bunch of my due dates got pushed back till after the weekend, which is both a blessing and a curse. It’s good because it gives me more time to work, but bad because it also gives me more time to procrastinate. But, I just have to learn to get it done.
I’m still really looking forward to going home, but I also think about what I’ll miss. Like I mentioned last week, life is going to be drastically different not living on campus. However, we’re having trouble finding a house, so I might just end up sleeping on someone’s dorm room floor for the first week or so. I’ve already gotten the offers. A few people I talked to said they didn’t find their house until the weeks before school started, so I’m not that worried.
The house that we wanted, our “dream house,” in fact, got leased to some friends of mine. They go to L&C too. It was our dream house because it came fully furnished with cable, internet, pots and pans, washer/dryer, and a hot tub. Pretty much everything you could ask for. The only reason we didn’t get it was because we couldn’t find anyone to live there during the summer, which seems to be a recurring theme in our house hunting.
Oh well, things will work out. I’m sure.
Until next time,
Teal
