So, this week I deliberately held off on updating until I had gone to see the Leon Redbone concert last night. For those of you not familiar with Leon Redbone, he’s a blues/jazz musician who plays pop tunes and standards from the 20’s and 30’s in an old-timey way. Naturally, I’m in love with him and everything he does as a result. My friends and I got tickets to go see him through KLC, which got comped tickets. The show was at the Aladdin Theater, which is a gorgeous old theater from the 1930’s which has been restored by the McMenamin brothers and now serves as a concert venue. It’s perfectly atmospheric for a guy like Leon Redbone.
The concert began with a folk act by a guy named Joe “Pancake Breakfast.” He was silly and funny to watch on stage, and while his music wasn’t likely to get you ready to dance, it was fun to listen to and just pleasant. It kind of represents what I like about a lot of contemporary folk, which is that it doesn’t and shouldn’t take itself too seriously. Then Redbone came on and did his set. I’m proud to say that I actually recognized some of the tunes he played, namely “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “I Ain’t Got Nobody” along with a tango by Jelly Roll Morton. His act has some strong comedic elements to it; he claims he was born October 29, 1929, a dubious date given that it’s the same as the Stock Market Crash. He claims to have known the composers of the sing he sings and he drinks on stage, claiming it’s necessary for an unnamed malady. It was an excellent show and my friends enjoyed the sight of me nerding out over older pop tunes from the Great Depression.
It was an eventful week even without the Leon Redbone concert. Work on the great research paper has begun for E&D and I’m proud to say I’m about a quarter of the way through it. There’s a Spanish final project I’m working on too along with a couple of tests I’ve got to worry about in the near future. I’m tired and ready to take it easy after this year but I think I can get through finals without too many problems.
My project down in the radio station is finally reaching a close as well, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s been a semester of work and a lot of time has been put into it, but it’s gonna help a lot with the cave in future months. The lack of congestion will make things much easier to file, which makes me a great deal happier. It will also make things easier to find in the first place. The money we make from selling the CDs can then to something useful, or at least fun.
Lacking other notable events in my humble life, this is where I’m going to sign off this week. Here are a few pictures of the concert. If you have any questions, send me an e-mail at rzlarson@lclark.edu
