Theatre

Chair: Stephanie K. Arnold

The Department of Theatre offers study in dramatic literature, theatre history, and all areas of performance including acting, directing, playwriting, design, and dance as well as providing students with the opportunity to participate in theatre productions on the Main Stage of Fir Acres Theatre or in the Black Box. The department emphasizes the development of analytical and expressive skills as well as the development of individual talent. Effective writing and discussion are encouraged in all areas of the curriculum. Theatre study at Lewis & Clark encourages excellence in performance combined with an understanding of the aesthetic, social, philosophical, and historical underpinnings of drama.

The production program includes a series of plays and dance concerts directed by faculty, students, and visiting professional artists. Lewis & Clark theatre students have the opportunity to participate in outstanding classics and contemporary plays as actors, designers, directors, and crew members. Plays are chosen for their contribution to theatre studies and the larger campus debate of social and philosophical issues. Participation is open to the entire campus and the department endorses a policy of color-blind casting.
